Look Out! Driverless Cars are Coming!
A University of Michigan study says a system with both driverless and human-operated cars would not be safe, especially for the human-driven vehicles.
In 2015, driverless cars have made huge leaps in progress, with exhibitions of their reliability taking place in England while American companies vie for attention with announcements about their own driverless car innovations.
In mid-February, Sony announced it is teaming with Japanese robotics company ZNP to create a self-driving automobile. Sony has invested almost $1 billion in ZMP as it tries to stay in step with Google in the driverless car industry.
Starting in February in Briton, England, a driverless Land Rover Defender will be motoring around the campus at the University of the West of England. Similar experiments this year will take place in Milton Keynes, Coventry and Greenwich.
Meanwhile, researchers Michael Silvak and Brandon Schoettle at the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute put a damper on the progress reports about driverless cars. In a study titled “Road Safety with Self-Driving Vehicles”. The U of M researchers came to the conclusion that “it is not a foregone conclusion that a self-driving vehicle would ever perform more safely than an experienced, middle-aged driver.”
