What is ADAS Technology and How is it Contributing to Increased Vehicle Repair Costs?

What is ADAS Technology and How is it Contributing to Increased Vehicle Repair Costs? According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), vehicle repair costs have increased by as much as 32% in the last three years. Thatcham—the UK’s version of the U.S.’s Insurance Institute for Highway Safety—released a study that cites increased complexity of vehicle materials, the rising cost of spare parts and advanced technology as possible reasons for the sharp increase. However, one major culprit that they cannot deny is the use of ADAS... [Lire la suite]

Google's driverless cars make progress

Google's driverless cars make progress The number of human interventions in journeys made by driverless cars from Google company Waymo in California more than halved in 2016. There were only 124 "disengagement" incidents last year, where a driver had to take control of a test vehicle on public roads, down from 341 in 2015. The cars drove nearly 636,000 miles last year, compared with just over 424,000 in 2015. Other states in the US do not require such reporting. The California Department of Motor Vehicles published... Why trucks are leading the way when it comes to autonomous technology

Why trucks are leading the way when it comes to autonomous technology Carmakers are making incredible advances when it comes to autonomous technology, but the first fully autonomous vehicles to hit the roads may actually be trucks, with the transport behemoths proving naturally suited to self-driving technology. Packaging Self-driving vehicles cram in an incredible amount of technology. There’s LiDAR, radar, a huge array of different cameras and other sensors, mapping and GPS and a computer that has to make sense of it all. If it’s... [Lire la suite]

13 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

13 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Automotive safety technology is pretty easy to wrap your head around, but advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are a little harder to pin down. At this point, the debate over whether anti-lock brakes are really necessary is pretty much nonexistent, but most technologies classified as ADAS are still seen as luxuries or even amusing curiosities. The issue is that advanced driver assistance systems are systems and features that provide a driver with essential information, automate difficult... [Lire la suite]

The future of automotive is coming faster than you think

The future of automotive is coming faster than you think As excitedly as we talk about it, you’d think the promise of fully autonomous vehicles is right around the bend, just another few miles and we’ll pull into our destination. In truth, we’re not there yet, and a few sceptics even suggest we’ll never get there — too many bumps in the road ahead. As engineers, we know that we’ll get to the holy grail of autonomous driving. The key questions are how long will it take, what’s the best route and how much will it cost? Let’s pull out... [Lire la suite]

printed and reprintable tire to improve safety

printed and reprintable tire to improve safety The Vision made its US debut last week, but it's not a prototype of a wheel that will hit production lines anytime soon. Instead, this is a demonstration of the features that will eventually trickle down into mass-market tires of the future. Importantly, the Vision is both a wheel and airless tire in one. That means there is no need for inflation or rims; the entire mechanical structure is sturdy enough to support the vehicle but still flexible enough to absorb impact and pressure.... [Lire la suite]
