CITY OF BRISTOL TO CREATE DRIVERLESS CARS FOR THE ELDERLY
English scientists work to create easy-to-access mobility for senior and isolated citizens.
Researchers from Bristol are harnessing the potential of automated driving to grant all citizens access to mobility. In the "Flourish Project", specialists from the University of the West of England (UWE) and the Bristol Robotics Laboratory are working to develop a driverless infrastructure for elderly citizens, isolated adults, and people who do not drive.
As the Bristol Post reports, the initiative is dedicated to reduce loneliness among secluded citizens, and provide users who do not drive with the individual freedom to move around without depending on others.
"Ageing brings a host of physical and cognitive impairments, together with long-term conditions, resulting in the need for added support," says Praminda Caleb-Solly, Associate Professor at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory. Being mobile would be a prerequisite to stay healthy and be an active member of society, she added.
